How Much Coverage is Available?
VGLI coverage is issued in multiples of $10,000 up to a maximum of
$400,000. However, a Servicemember's initial VGLI coverage amount cannot exceed
the amount of SGLI they had in force at the time of separation from
service.
Effective April 11, 2011, VGLI insureds who are under age 60 and have less than $400,000 in coverage can purchase up to $25,000 of additional coverage on each five-year anniversary of their coverage, up to the maximum $400,000. No medical underwriting is required for the additional coverage.

How to Convert My SGLI to VGLI Coverage
To convert SGLI to VGLI, an eligible member can:
Apply for VGLI Online
You can apply for VGLI online using our online application. The online application will walk you through each step of the application process. OSGLI will instantly evaluate your application and let you know if your coverage is approved or if your application needs further review. To apply for VGLI by mail you can download and complete SGLV 8714, Application for Veterans' Group Life Insurance and mail it to the Office of Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance with the required premium and a copy of your DD 214 or other equivalent proof of service.
When to Apply for VGLI
You must apply within one year and 120 days from discharge. However, Servicemembers
who submit their application within 120 days of discharge do not need
to submit evidence of good health. Service members who apply after
the 120-day period must submit evidence of good health.
VGLI Commercial Policy Conversion Feature
